Travis Bristol

Associate Professor at University of California, Berkeley

Travis J. Bristol is an associate professor at UC Berkeley’s School of Education, the Department of African American Studies (by courtesy), as well as faculty director of the Center for Research on Expanding Educational Opportunity. His research focuses on the role of educational policies in shaping teacher workplace experiences and retention, professional learning communities, and the intersections of race and gender in educational settings. He has authored over 70 publications and co-edited two books on teachers of color and male educators of color. A former NYC public school teacher, Dr. Bristol earned degrees from Amherst College, Stanford University, and Columbia University. He has received numerous honors, including the  American Educational Research Association’s Early Career Award (2024) and the UC Berkeley Chancellor’s Award for Community Engaged Teaching (2025). Dr. Bristol has secured over $6.7 million in research funding and serves on multiple editorial boards and boards of directors, including chairing the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards—the first Black person to do so.
